Moving Soon DIY Vs Hiring A Pro

Relocating to a new home, whether it’s across town or across the country, comes with a lot of planning and preparing. Not only do you have to find a home that fits your needs, but you have to figure out how to get all your stuff there too! And most of us have a bunch of stuff—a lot more than we’d like to admit.

So, once you sell your home, how do you manage to get everything from point A to point B? You either take the job on yourself, or hire a professional moving company instead. There are pros and cons to each method, so deciding which is best for your situation is key.

Pros and Cons of Moving Yourself

Do-it-yourself moving is advantageous in several ways, but also comes with a few challenges:

Pro: More Affordable

Moving yourself can be much less expensive than hiring movers (in most cases). Doing the work on your own means you don’t have to pay anyone else to do it for you! The most common expense for do-it-yourself movers is a truck rental, which can be reasonably priced if you choose to move on a weekday or during a less-popular moving season. But if you can borrow a truck or already have your own that will fit your furniture, that’s one less expense you have to account for. Hiring a moving company means paying a crew to do the work for you, so asking a few friends or family members to help out can also dramatically reduce your costs.

Con: Physically Demanding

Saving money as a do-it-yourself mover, however, does come with a price. Depending on your strength, age, and health, moving can be extremely strenuous on your body not only on the day of, but also for several days afterwards. Only you can decide if you’re physically able to do the work, and if saving money in exchange for your energy is worth the cost to your body and wallet.

Pro: Flexible Scheduling

Moving is stressful enough, but having to plan your schedule around a moving company’s availability adds one more item to your to-do list. Doing the work yourself means you have the freedom to choose any day and time you’d like. If the only time slot you have available (or simply when you feel like moving) is from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. on a Sunday, you’re not limited by a company’s daytime hours. Go ahead and do your thing, night owl!

Con: Time Away from Work

Renting a moving truck on a weekend is more expensive than during the week because that’s when most people aren’t at work. (High demand = high cost.) If you want to save money by renting a truck on a weekday, that most likely means you’ll have to take vacation if you have any accumulated, or a day without pay if you don’t. Do the math to see which option makes the most financial sense.

Pros and Cons of Hiring Movers

Hiring a moving company can make a big move easier, but it can also add stress to an already complex process:

Pro: Experience and Expertise

Reputable moving companies train their employees to pack and transport furniture safely and correctly. These employees have likely moved many people, many times. They know tricks to make sure all your furniture fits snugly in the truck, and they can do it quicker than an inexperienced person. If you choose to hire movers, make sure to do your research in advance or ask friends and family for recommendations of a reliable company.

Con: Your Stuff is Just “Stuff”

Even though movers get paid to carefully transport your belongings, your great grandmother’s antique china hutch doesn’t mean as much to them as it does to you. While most moving companies have insurance policies covering your personal belongings if they are damaged, some of your favorite items and one-of-a-kind antiques probably aren’t replaceable if they’re broken. Decide if you can trust another person to move your important items or if you’d rather rely on yourself.

Pro: Physically Demanding for Someone Else

When you hire movers to do the heavy lifting for you, then you don’t have to do the heavy lifting yourself! You most likely have a lot more furniture and belongings than you anticipated, so it can be overwhelming if you don’t have professional help. Movers know the proper methods to lift heavy items to avoid injury and expedite the process, so hiring out help can be the easiest and quickest way to get the job done.

Con: Strangers in Your Home

If you don’t like the idea of giving people you’ve never met full access to your home and personal belongings, then hiring movers might not be the best option for you. If your items are stolen during the moving process it would be hard to prove. But if you hire a reputable company that has been referred by someone you trust, then there shouldn’t be much to worry about.

Even though moving to a new home can be stressful, it is also a very exciting time. The Adler Home Team wishes you the best on your journey!
