How To Keep Calm If Youre Not Loving Thy Neighbor

How To Keep Calm If Youre Not Loving Thy Neighbor

As much as you might like the people who live next door, they will likely aggravate you at some point. Their dog might howl when you’re trying to sleep, or their taste in music (at excessive volumes) might insult your ears on a regular basis. It’s a fact of life that you’ll roll your eyes or take a deep breath and count to 10 if you live in close proximity to other humans.

Before you pull your hair out, and try tolook up what your home is worth so you can move, here are a few tips to handle those “bad neighbor” behaviors.

Decide if the Problem is Worth Confronting

Does your neighbor regularly park their oversized truck in front of your driveway, or was it a one-time incident? Do they always leave piles of garbage on the curb on Mondays when trash pickup isn’t until Thursday? Whatever annoying behavior your neighbor has, you should observe if it is just occasional or on a frequent basis. Ask yourself if it’s worth making the situation worse, or even making an enemy. Make sure you’re raising heck over a worthy issue that directly affects you—if it doesn’t, then it might be best to let it slide.

Don’t be passive aggressive

In this digital age, having a face-to-face conversation is becoming more and more rare. Take the time to approach your neighbor directly about their behavior if it has started to affect you, your family, and the way you enjoy your home. It’s better to have civil conversation in person rather than hoping they’ll notice that the subtle annoyance in your Facebook status is about them. They might not even realize they’re bothering you, so make sure you’ve made a clear point as to how they’re affecting your sanity.

Practice What You Preach

If you’ve made it clear to your neighbors that them mowing the lawn every Saturday at 6:45 a.m. wakes up your sleeping toddler, then make sure you’re not causing equal animosity from them by partaking in similar loud behavior at inappropriate times. Be aware of your own actions that could potentially be as annoying to others as your neighbor’s actions are to you.

File a Complaint

It can be frustrating if your neighbor’s annoying actions or bad habits haven’t changed after you’ve voiced your concerns directly and have been a model neighbor in return. If they won’t listen to you, filing an official complaint with your Homeowners Association, city, or even local police department (if the situation continues to get progressively worse) should hopefully affect some change. Make sure you’ve documented each incident so you’re prepared with pertinent information that will support your claims.

If They Don’t Shape Up, You Might Have to Ship Out

Having a terrible neighbor can tremendously affect your quality of life. Living next to person (or family) with unpleasant behavior can cause anger and frustration, and can make your home become a source of tension and unhappiness.

If you’ve tried all your options but nothing has worked, moving to a new home might be the only solution to keep your sanity.
